The self and heart in management.
It is the new sexy to talk about psychological safety and performance especially in the times of coaching and Irish organisations competing in the global market. However, these aren't always engaged in a way that facilitates both to happen. Usually, we see an over-emphasis on one than the other and that is no one's fault, these things happen due to targets, market places and resources but it can be rectified.
Most managers have a level of influence and power to bring a more effective approach to people performance, staff engagement and psychological safety but they don't always have the skills needed, to bring it beyond where they have currently brought it.
Sile Walsh and Thomas McCormack are experienced and qualified coaches and are now a newly formed coaching duo. They believe that it is not only possible to lead with more heart and less hassle but have coached people to achieving it! In this first of its kind Masterclass, Thomas and Sile set out to bring the methods they use to support managers in being less stressed and more effective in their roles!
“It is no surprise that managing people is stressful, why wouldn’t it be? People are complicated but when we don’t support managers in how to manage themselves and their direct reports we are only looking for trouble” Walsh goes on to discuss how people management can be a trigger far beyond what our workplaces currently understand and that with a little insight and support, a whole team can move forward quite effectively and with far more ease.
“I feel it's so important to work with people managers as I feel people managers are constantly under pressure to have all the answers for everyone else, but they don't often have somewhere to turn when they want a piece of advice...there is an unspoken pressure to always be right" Thomas McCormack
This isn’t a quick fix, this masterclass equips participants with insight relevant to their everyday roles and engages each participant to define their own development plan because without “ a plan and commitment to integration and development, it is just another tick the box training” and Thomas and Sile have no intention of this being anything of that nature.
What is unique about this Masterclass is that it will be developed based on the challenges an strengths of participants and utilising the adaptability of coaching psychology it will ensure it remains participant centred and aligned with the realities of managing people for each person in the room.
When I asked Walsh why she wanted to do it in a group setting she answered “Often managers are missing a connection with peers and aren’t sharing their knowledge or expertise, simply going it alone in silos. When you bring a group of able individuals into a room and invite a diversity of all kinds there is a richness that occurs and it is in this the magic happens”
The duo believes that unfortunately most workplaces aren't set up to support the manager and as a result, it is not set up to support the people. When people managers take the space to reflect on their own management style, their interpersonal skills, their ability to ask for help and show up as themselves, it can be transformational for the manager, their employees and the overall general workplace happiness and performance.
It is not only the participants who will benefit, Walsh and McCormack go on to describe how organisations are busy and with the best will in the world managers need ongoing support and development to ensure they can motivate their teams effectively, create psychological safety and influence the culture in ways that promote employee engagement and retention.
The People Management Masterclass will take place in Dublin November 30th
